Easy Crinkle Cookie Recipe – The Best Chocolate Cookies

Chocolate Crinkle Cookie

Crinkle cookies are the perfect mix of brownie and cookie. They’re known for their distinctive ‘crinkle’ appearance. The exterior is coated in powdered sugar, creating a cracked or “crinkled” surface as they bake. This not only adds a charming visual appeal but also results in a contrast of textures – a slightly crisp exterior giving way to a soft and chewy brownie-like interior. This recipe has become one of our favorite chocolate cookies ever!

This Crinkle Cookie recipe is easy to make and only requires a few basic ingredients

Making this Chocolate Crinkle Cookie recipe requires just a few basic ingredients, making your whole kitchen smell deliciously chocolaty! Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Sugar: We use granulated sugar, but you can opt for brown sugar instead.
  • Oil: Opt for a neutral oil like vegetable or canola. This liquid fat brings moisture to the cookies, contributing to their soft texture.
  • Cocoa Powder: The hero of the chocolate flavor, pure cocoa powder infuses the cookies with rich, deep chocolatey flavor. Choose a high-quality, unsweetened cocoa powder for the best results.
  • Flour: All-purpose flour provides structure to the cookies. It’s the backbone that holds everything together.
  • Eggs: Eggs act as binders, bringing the ingredients into a cohesive dough. They also contribute to the cookies’ fudgy texture.
  • Baking Powder: A small amount of baking powder helps the cookies rise slightly, creating the crinkle design, and contributing to their soft and airy interior.
  • Vanilla Extract: Just a teaspoon of vanilla extract adds a layer of warmth and enhances the overall flavor profile.
  • Icing Sugar: The finishing touch involves rolling the cookie dough balls in icing sugar before baking. As the cookies spread and crack in the oven, the sugar coating creates that beautiful crinkled effect.

If you like it extra chocolaty, you can add a tablespoon of instant coffee powder. This will help elevate the chocolate flavor even more!

Servings: 20 crinkle cookies

  • large mixing bowl
  • small bowl
  • electric hand mixer

For the dough

  • 30 g pure, unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 150 g sugar
  • 60 g vegetable oil
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 165 g flour
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 2 eggs
  • pinch of salt

Crinkle pattern

  • 60 g icing sugar

  • Prepare the dough: In a large bowl, whisk together cocoa powder, sugar and oil. Then add remaining ingredients and mix for 2-3 minutes, until fully combined.
  • Let it chill: Cover the bowl with plastic foil and refrigerate the dough for at least 3 hours or overnight. This helps thicken the dough and helps create the classic crinkle design when in the oven.
  • Roll in icing sugar: Fill a bowl with icing sugar. Take about 1 tbsp per cookie and use another spoon to push it into the icing sugar. Toss the dough around and start rolling into a ball. Repeat for all cookies, they should have about the size of a walnut.
Tipp: Before baking the cookies, make sure they all still have a white layer of icing sugar. Given humidity or moistness of the dough, the icing sugar might slightly fade. You may need to double coat them in icing sugar – the thicker the icing sugar layer, the more prominent the crinkle pattern will be.
  • Bake & enjoy: Bake the crinkle cookies on 180C (356 F) for 10 minutes. Let cool and store in an airtight box. Enjoy!
